A minimum of 13 passengers perish and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose term finished the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
