Right-leaning reactions to the limited release of documents related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in U.S. history has a President or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the public about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the censorship process.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While the former president's identity and likeness appear in portions of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt serious questions about what may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for greater openness.
“The public are raging and walking away,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the law, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this file dump grossly fails to adhere to both the intent and the letter of the act,” he added.
Some Rightwing Commentators Rally In Support of the Release
However, some conservative commentators and Trump allies came out strongly behind the administration.
The release—originating from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are entirely censored, and numerous of the men shown in photographs have their identities obscured.
But a few are not, including prominent figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed some rightwing figures to launch the attack.
“It’s pretty rich how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of no illegal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been concealing those files for months only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from what they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photographs as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Commentary Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that preceded the legislative approval to enact a law requiring the documents' publication.
The commentator, who recently secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a full disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were given hard-copy folders of files that contained no previously unseen data.
