Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these spaces have shut down – approximately 16% of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, top acts like Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all supported the Music Venues Trust in its initiatives to support the industry, by applying a modest fee to their ticket prices, which goes to help local stages.

Fender also took part, raising more than £100,000 on his recent tour to assist 38 local spots across the UK.

The donation assisted locations that were facing imminent closure due to difficulties caused by flooding, fire incidents and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and sound issues.

Other venues received financial assistance in improving amenities and gear that directly benefitted musicians and concertgoers.

"The concept that revenue from concerts in big venues backs the local stages, where it all starts for performers like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has commented.

The first in that area and the other in the city were bought under the Own Our Venues scheme, which is funded by the arts council and supporters who purchase "stakes" in the venues.
