The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.
Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.
"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.
"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."
Injury History
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.
Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.
Backup Options
In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.
The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."
"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
