This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like typical body horror, but within Together exists a intense meditation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when the couple move from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the type of challenges that come with any relationship after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the symbolism never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.

Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
