TikTok Provides Users Control to Reduce Artificial Intelligence-Made Content in Personal Streams

Users will soon have a new feature that enables them to lessen the volume of AI-made videos appearing in their streams. This step comes as the service announced that it currently hosts more than 1 thousand million AI-generated clips.

Testing and Rollout

The update is undergoing trials over the following weeks before a global launch. This shift coincides with a increase in AI-generated material, driven by recent AI video creators.

AI Proliferation Online

It has been noted that nearly one in 10 of the fastest-growing video streams on another major platform exclusively feature AI-generated videos. A significant portion of this material is deemed mass-produced AI material, a label for inferior, factory-style content that is often nonsensical or bizarre.

Our research shows that a lot of users appreciate content produced via AI tools, including digital art to informative clips, and we want to offer the community the option to see more or less of that, based on their own choices,” said a spokesperson.

Scale of AI Content

TikTok disclosed that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its app identified as made with AI. Overall, more than 100 million videos are added to the service every day, making clips made by AI a limited percentage of its overall inventory.

Customizing Your Feed

Viewers will be in a position to limit or boost the amount of AI content they view by using the content preference setting in the platform and choosing “AI-generated content”. Additional categories that can already be adjusted under the filter include news, clothing, beauty, and movement.

Content Labeling and Policies

The platform’s policies mandate content makers to identify “realistic” AI-made content, and it prohibits malicious AI impersonations of well-known individuals or emergencies. Any authentic-looking artificial content that is without a tag can be taken down under its terms of service.

Furthermore, the service will from now on add an AI-generated tag to content made using its own AI tools, or detected by an cross-platform project for recognizing content made by AI. This action is designed to deter users from attempting to evade the tagging system.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is furthermore launching a $2m educational fund for experts and groups to create learning resources about responsible artificial intelligence. This program will assist non-profit groups focused on educating computer science.

Content Safety Approach

The platform has defended its moderation strategy, amid controversy over plans to lay off hundreds of review team members in Britain. The company is expected to cut 439 jobs in its content moderation team in the UK capital, with trade unions and online safety experts raising concerns that people are being substituted by machine-led review.

A senior executive stated that human moderation would continue to be important, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by eliminating the most distressing content prior to it is viewed by staff. TikTok reported a 76% decrease in shocking and graphic content reviewed by safety staff over the last 12 months due to reliance on its AI tools.

We believe it is crucial to integrate people and machines to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s extremely critical to minimize viewing of dangerous material as quickly as possible, which is the area in which a extensive automated help is proving valuable process content quickly.”
