Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.
Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Players will gain the option to contest certain decisions made by the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development follows just a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Notably, there is no cap on the number of reviews a player can initiate.
Practical Application
A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.
In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
